Leadership for Learning Program – Concepción

This one-of-a-kind program led by a group of dear friends and comrades from the School of Education at the Catholic University of Temuco is deliberately designed to prepare leaders to liberate learning in classrooms, schools, school networks and communities in Chile. Since 2018 I make time every year to work as with the leading team of this program, its professors, and
students, as a mentor and critical friend.

+Comunidad Leadership Centre.
This is one of two centres leading the national efforts in Chile to develop leadership capacity in schools and in the intermediate leadership structures of the evolving education system in Chile. The partnership leading this centre includes the Universities of Concepción, Atacama, and Austral, as well as Fundación Chile and Fundación Educacional Seminarium, and covers Atacama, Biobío, Los Ríos, and the Metropolitan Region. Together with my mentor and friend Michael Fullan, we are supporting the design and development of this leadership centre as advisors, critical friends, and instructors.

Redes de Tutoría developed and continues to spread a powerful pedagogy of tutorial relationships in Mexico and abroad. Also known at the Learning Community Project, this work represents one of the
most vibrant and resilient movements to liberate learning I’ve had the privilege to work with and support. Over the past two decades, the work of leaders in this movement has taken on multiple forms and been hosted by different organizations. I continue to support their work to liberate learning as a mentor, critical friend, and advisor. Currently, I am a member of the board of Redes de Tutoría.

Find out more about Redes de Tutoría here.

CONAFE (National Council for the Promotion of Education).

CONAFE is an autonomous branch of the Mexican Ministry of Education tasked with providing education services to the most remote communities across the country, through about 30 thousand education centers. This institution is where I started by career in education, alongside my lifelong mentor Gabriel Cámara. With Gabriel now back as the director of CONAFE, I have coordinated and hosted international seminars that bring
leaders and practitioners of the tutorial networks movement with national and international experts. I have also been supporting the design and monitoring of CONAFE’s ambitious strategy to liberate learning in thousands of Mexico’s the most remote communities.

Escuela Nueva represent one of the most powerful and longest lasting movements of pedagogical renewal in Colombia and abroad. Over the past few years, I’ve come to learn a lot about liberating
learning from this important initiative. This year I’ve had the tremendous privilege to be in close communication with Escuela Nueva’s co-founder and inaugural recipient of the Yidan Prize Vicky Colbert, to support the development of the narrative and story of Escuela Nueva with the double intention of amplifying its international visibility and link it to the most up to date knowledge on educational change, learning, and leadership.

Teacher Expert Networks, New South Wales, Australia.

The State of New South Wales is adopting a new curriculum, and teacher leaders from all over the State are organized in networks to user-test and develop feedback to the Ministry of Education for its implementation. The networks are growing into a powerful force for renewing the culture of schooling and policy development in New South Wales. I am supporting this work in an advisory and capacity
building role, alongside esteemed and admired colleagues Andy Hargreaves, Amanda Datnow, Pasi Sahlberg, Cindy Poortman and Chris Brown.

Active Deep Learner Experience, by Sega Group.

Sega Group is a social enterprise that has designed a powerful model to develop human developers, grounded on a deep and solid understanding of why and how people learn. The Active Deep Learner Experience has spread to 10 countries across the Global South. I met Mohamed Baghat, founder of the Sega Group in 2020 in Marrakesh, at the International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement. I was impressed by his organization’s approach to learning and professional development. Mohamed has become a dear and esteemed friend, and I have the privilege to support his work as an advisor and critical friend.
