He is involved in multiple efforts to liberate learning in school networks, districts, and education systems in the United States, Canada, Latin America, Africa, and Australia. As an educator and organizer, Santiago worked for over a decade to promote grassroots educational change initiatives in Mexican public schools serving historically marginalized communities. He was the director of a small NGO that catalyzed a movement to turn conventional classrooms into tutorial networks in nine thousand schools across the country. Schools that joined this movement, serving some of the most historically marginalized children across Mexico, showed remarkable gains in student performance and in three years were outperforming their more privileged counterparts. His academic work explores how effective pedagogies for deep learning can spread at scale. His most recent book is Liberating Learning: Educational Change as Social Movement. Santiago holds an Ed. M in International Education Policy and Ed. D on Education Policy, Leadership and Instructional Practice from Harvard. He completed postdoctoral studies and has been a visiting scholar at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. He lives in Toronto with his wife and their two boys.
